Dr. Richard Hamilton
was born in Omaha, Nebraska and raised in Illinois.
He joined the Center for Retina and Macular Disease
in 2006.
Dr. Hamilton was educated at Harvard University.
He received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry
magna cum laude at Harvard College and his medical
degree at Harvard Medical School. While at Harvard
he studied a diabetic model of cataract development
sponsored by a National Science Research Award.
Dr. Hamilton’s training has been extensive
in scope. He completed a fellowship in anatomic and
clinical pathology at Massachusetts General Hospital
where he performed solo autopsies, processed surgical
specimens from all of the major organ systems and
was involved all major divisions of clinical pathology.
After completing medical school, he initially chose
to follow in his fathers footsteps in vascular surgery.
He embarked upon general surgical residency at the
University of Colorado Health Sciences Center before
realizing his true calling was in Ophthalmology, an
interest he had developed in medical school.
Dr. Hamilton subsequently completed his residency
in Ophthalmology at the Doheny Eye Institute 2003
and his fellowship in Retinal and Vitreous Diseases
at the Medical College of Wisconsin in 2006.
He has been intricately involved in resident teaching
and speaking to local Ophthalmology groups. He has
published 5 abstracts and 2 book chapters while in
training and has participated numerous other research
projects. He has lectured at the American Academy
of Ophthalmology.
He is currently a member of The American Academy
of Ophthalmology, the Vitreous Society, the Florida
Society of Ophthalmology, the American Medical Association,
the Florida Medical Association and the Polk County
Medical Society.
His research interests include surgical instrumentation,
ophthalmic anesthesia and clinical trials of new pharmacologic
compounds in retinal and macular disease.
His hobbies include sports, book collecting, physical
fitness and travel.
