Michael
J. Tolentino, MD was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts
and joined the Center for Retina and Macular Disease
in 2004.
Dr. Tolentino received his Bachelor
of Science degree from Brown University in 1989 in computer
science. He received his Doctorate from the University
of Massachusetts Medical School.
Dr. Tolentino went on to the Massachusetts
Eye and Ear Infirmary where he was granted a Post Doctoral
Angiogenesis Research Fellowship from 1994 – 1996.
He then completed his Residency in Ophthalmology at
the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in 1999. After
completing his residency Dr Tolentino was granted a
Fellowship in Retina/Vitreous Diseases at the Scheie
Eye Institute at the University of Pennsylvania from
1999 – 2001 where he also served as the chief
resident from 2000 – 2001.
Dr. Tolentino then went on to teach
at the University of Pennsylvania from 2002 –
2004 where he was an Assistant Professor in Ophthalmology.
During his tenure Dr. Tolentino was an active member
of the Laser and Radiation Safety Committee, the Ophthalmology
Residency Selection Committee, the Chairman of the Retina
Fellowship Selection Committee, the University of Pennsylvania
Cardiovascular and Diabetes Strategic Initiative Committee.
Dr. Tolentino is recognized as a leader
in his field and is a member of the review boards for
the American Journal of Ophthalmology, the British Journal
of Ophthalmology, Comprehensive Ophthalmology Updates,
Retina, Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science,
Current Eye Research, the Journal of Cellular Physiology,
Molecular Therapy, Ophthalmology, Human Gene Therapy,
Archives of Ophthalmology, and the Proceedings National
Academy of Science.
Dr. Tolentino is a frequent lecturer
concerning new treatments for Macular Degeneration and
Diabetic Retinopathy and travels extensively throughout
the United States giving educational presentations.
Dr. Tolentino is recognized as an expert
in his field and as an author and researcher has over
83 journal publications. As a Clinical Investigator
he has performed 9 research studies evaluating new drug
treatments for Macular Degeneration and Diabetic Retinopathy.
As a consultant Dr. Tolentino has provided
services for the Ophthalmic Foundation of the Philippines,
Asian Eye Institute, Merck, Soros Venture Capital, GTI/Novartis
Scientific Advisory Board, Acuity Pharmaceuticals, and
Gerson Lehrman.
Dr. Tolentino has several patents including
Laser Induced Gene Therapy and siRNA Inhibition of Angiogenesis
which is an exciting new treatment for Macular Degeneration
and Diabetic Retinopathy. |
