Dr. Tolentino is scientific advisor and consultant for several pharmaceutical companies. At the University of Pennsylvania, he was principal investigator of a National Institutes of Health-funded lab, directed the retina service at the Philadelphia Veterans Administration Hospital, and served as Assistant Professor and surgical teacher for ophthalmology residents and the director of the retinal surgical fellowship. He lectures internationally on new therapies for macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy and has delivered over 100 invited lectures in over 15 countries.
Recognized Expert in New Therapies for Retinal and Macular Diseases
Dr. Tolentino helped develop all current treatments for wet macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, including Avastin, Lucentis, Macugen and Verteporfin. He was first in the world to test Avastin in a model of eye disease 15 years ago. He has more than 80 peer reviewed publications and 5 issued patents. As a clinical investigator he has been principal investigator on over 70 clinical research studies evaluating new drug treatments for wet and dry macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vein occlusion. At the CRMD he is helping to develop eyedrops for wet macular degeneration, novel treatments for dry macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. He invented Bevasiranib a drug being tested for wet AMD by OPKO health. He founded Acuity Pharmaceuticals which merged to become OPKO health.
